Rainbow Readers Program Details
In response to the "Out of the Pews and Into the Streets" effort the volunteers working with children and youth have developed a reading program for underprivileged children. The program is called Rainbow Readers.
A priority of this program is giving time and attention in academic areas and thereby increasing the children's chances of success at school and bettering their lives. As a joint effort with Eatonville Denton Johnson Center, lower elementary children will be transported by the center to our church and will spend time with volunteers from 4:30 to 5:30 pm weekly.
Many of these children attend Hungerford Elementary School, a school which recently received a "F" on state testing, As with any new program there are needs to be met. Donations of new or used children's books are needed. Boxes are provided outside the office area for your donations. To become a volunteer for this program is really quite simple:
-
If you love children
-
can read a book to a child
-
and / or listen to a child read
-
can give a little more than an hour of your time each week
then you meet the qualifications! A sign-up sheet is located on the table outside the Church Office.
